What better opportunity to visit a church than to attend a wedding?  I had long heard about the beauty of the Nuestra Señora de Gracia Church in Guadalupe Viejo in Makati, but only had the chance to visit during the Philippines’ recently concluded prime wedding season of December-January.  All decked in wedding party gear, the MRT may not exactly be the best way to go.  But for a casual visit to enjoy the church’s rustic ambience and soak up its 400-year-old history, getting off from the Guadalupe Station of the MRT may just be the most hassle-free way of getting there.

From the southbound side of the MRT, take the stairs from the platform down to the EDSA sidewalk.  Walk approximately 120 meters south along EDSA, and right before reaching the Loyola Memorial Chapel, you’ll see Bernardino Street.  Take a right on Bernardino, and walk in the street’s general east direction.  Caution must be exercised in treading this particular road, as the lack of parking at the nearby memorial chapel, a densely populated community, and plying (or should “flying” be more appropriate?) jeepneys, calls for intense pedestrian presence of mind.  After approximately 250 meters, you’ll see the church on your right.

It was a mid-afternoon wedding, cloaked by a clear-blue sky.  A popular venue for such events, the Church’s historically weathered façade and wide front steps (marvelous for sweeping bridal photography), coupled with its intimate interior, create an atmosphere of warmth and familiarity.  The breeze came in from the Church’s eastern side then, sweeping up the day’s dancing joyful vibes of the soon-to-be-married couple’s well-wishers all the way to vaulted ceiling, the organ music echoing off of the stone walls.  Truly, such an intimate space and such a joyful event, enclosed within the Church’s historically hallowed walls added an element of solemnity to the affair, sanctified in happiness.

For what it stands for and stood through, the Nuestra Señora de Gracia Church is a pilgrimage point, a hidden gem in the bustling Guadalupe area.  Having endured time and history makes it a must-see, but being there in one’s own personal context, be it as a seeking pilgrim, a curious tourist, or a beaming wedding guest, makes it an experience to behold.
